NumisMedia Weekly Market Report

Whitman Baltimore & Stack's Bowers Galleries Equals Success

June 22, 2026

Dealers and collectors gathered again at the most recent Whitman Baltimore Expo where the metals continued to garner most of the attention. However, rare coins have been in steady demand, although some have found their strength at lower levels. Most dealers are actively seeking quality fresh material for their clients and inventory but are finding that to be an uphill battle. A successful event for dealers may be in the connections they make and the information they gather, but staying true to the current market and diversifying will usually lead to more trades and profit.
Stack's Bowers Galleries held the official auction of the Whitman Baltimore Expo, with lot viewing throughout the show and the sale concluding this past week at their Costa Mesa offices in California. This auctioneer methodology has been largely successful since the pandemic lockdown, so the home office auctions continue to this day. SBG did not disappoint with a large array of rarities, especially in their Rarities Night sale. There was an extensive selection of high-grade Proof Barber Half Dollars and some noteworthy rare U.S. Gold and Patterns that attracted much of the attention. Please check the Stack's Bowers Galleries website for all prices realized from their June Showcase Auction.
1841 Seated Dime No Drapery certified by NGC PR67+ and CAC

The original mintage for the 1841 No Drapery Seated Dime is unknown, but its true rarity has been well documented throughout the years. There are two coins known to exist, one a PCGS AU50 and the NGC PR67+ coin from this sale which brought $341,600; it also has CAC approval. It was previously sold at auction in 2015 for $205,625, and again in 2022 for $312,000. The history of this coin is a virtual who's who in numismatic lore: from Brand, Green, Newman, and Gardner.

1878 $2.5 Gold Pattern certified by CACG PR66 Cameo

Patterns are typically not mainstream collector coins. The mintages of patterns are restricted so the dealer community is not able to market them as they do with regular coinage. But Pattern specialists know the value of the rarest of the rare. The 1878 $2.5 Gold Pattern with the Reeded Edge is likely unique even though two supposed coins are listed in population reports. This 1878 $2.5 Gold Pattern is certified by CACG PR66 Cameo and realized $439,200 in this sale. The last time it sold at auction was in 2022 for $432,000. Its provenance includes Colonel Green, King Farouk, Kosoff, and Simpson, among others.
