Proof U.S. Gold Leads Stack's Bowers Spring Showcase

March 16, 2026

Stack's Bowers Galleries had lot viewing for their Spring Showcase Auction at the just completed Whitman Baltimore Expo; the sale was held the following week at their California offices. With bullion sales leading the market, dealers are in need of inventory, especially in gold. This sale contained numerous U.S Gold rarities with Proof Gold highlighting much of the sale. Over the last couple of years Proof U.S. Gold has been immensely popular and even more so when certified as Deep Cameo. We have spotlighted below two highest certified Gold coins that set new sales records. Contact Stack's Bowers for a complete listing of prices realized.
1861 C $5 Gold certified by PCGS MS63 with CAC

The 1861 C $5 Gold is quite rare in all grades, with an original mintage of 6,879 coins, and is especially rare in Mint State. The population reports indicate there are fewer than fifteen coins certified in all Mint State grades. The MS63 in this sale with the CAC approval is the highest certified and it realized $408,000. The previous value listed for the CAC coin was a mere $175,000, which resulted from a sale back in December 2020. There is a long provenance for this coin which is best known by the Elrod Collection, and also served as the plate coin for Doug Winter's 2008 edition of Charlotte Mint Gold Coinage.
