Stack Collection Part I: The King Brings $6 Million

December 15, 2025

The Stack's Bowers Galleries December 2025 Auction included some big headliners, including an 1804 Dollar, revered as the 'King of American Coins' and is always sure to attract attention (more below), and the 2025 Omega Privy Mark three coin Lincoln Cents sets (the top seller was the last set in the series for $800,000 which included the canceled three pairs of dies).
But there were other tremendous rarities in this sale, many from the highly specialized and well-received James A. Stacks, Sr. Collection Part I (the second auction for this collection is scheduled for February 2026). The highlights below are focused on some of the top early rarities from the Stack's Bowers Galleries December sale, especially U.S. Gold with an emphasis on Twenty Dollar Liberties.
1804 Draped Bust Dollar Class III certified by PCGS PR65 with CAC & CMQ

While all 1804 Dollars are extremely rare and most have a storied history with well-known pedigrees, this particular 1804 Class III Dollar has no known history prior to the acquisition by James A. Stack. Certified by PCGS as PR65, it also has CAC and CMQ approvals, and it realized $6,000,000 in this sale. The record price for an 1804 Dollar was established by Stack's Bowers in 2021 when the very pedigreed PCGS PR68 Class I realized $7,680,000. The previous CAC value was listed at $5,250,000, which will be updated.

1859 $20 Gold certified by PCGS PR64 Deep Cameo with CAC & CMQ

The 1859 $20 Gold had an original mintage of just fifty coins. There are only ten coins certified in all grades of Proof, including the Cameo and Deep Cameo designations, and with resubmissions, there could be even fewer known coins in the market today. This coin, previously owned by Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr., is very striking with great Cameo appearance on both sides. There is only one coin certified higher in PCGS PR64+ Deep Cameo and it is difficult to see why the coin in this sale did not receive the + designation as well; it brought $900,000, and since we had no previous value for the Deep Cameo coin, it provides new pricing data.
