Auctioneers on Display Part II - Stack's Bowers Galleries Summer Showcase

Multi-million dollars in rare coins will hit the auction block this week as the culmination of the two ANA World's Fair of Money major auctions will be held at the offices of Stack's Bowers Galleries and Heritage Auctions. These two giants shared the spotlight at last week's event in Oklahoma City. With so many six-figure, and higher, rarities in these two major auctions, will the market be able to absorb so many high-quality rare coins?
Last week we covered the Heritage Auctions Signature Sale in our Market Report: ANA Auctioneers on Display at the ANA World's Fair of Money. The Stack's Bowers portion of the ANA Sale includes numerous Morgan Dollar rarities, and collectors will be extremely aggressive for the many top graded coins. Rare Gold with seldom seen varieties are also included in this sale with a heavy concentration of Early $5 Gold. There were actually way too many highlights to choose from; below are just some of the featured lots from the Stack's Bowers Galleries Summer Showcase.
1884 S Morgan Dollar certified by PCGS MS67 and CAC
The 1884 S Morgan Dollar is a rare coin by date, but above the MS64 grade, the rarity increases. There are only eight coins certified above MS64 with the highest being a single PCGS MS68 with the CAC approval, followed by this ex-Jack Lee collection rarity in PCGS MS67 with CAC. The current value is listed at $900,000; even the MS66+ coin has a rather notable value of $470,000. Many buyers have been focused on Gold and other bullion products of late, this coin could be an indicator for an expanding market.

1862 $3 Gold certified by PCGS PR67 Deep Cameo
The 1862 $3 Gold had an original mintage of just thirty-five coins. According to the population reports, there are at least seventeen coins certified as Deep Cameo; the highest is a PCGS 67+ which sold at auction in 2023 for $336,000. Over the past two years, there have been many $3 Gold rarities hitting the auction circuit as collectors have become fascinated with the Proof issues. The popularity increased tenfold over this period, and prices have skyrocketed. The PCGS PR67 Deep Cameo has a current listed value of $325,000.
