NumisMedia Weekly Market Report

Dealer to Dealer Activity Preserving Event Relevancy

July 14, 2025

In the last few weeks dealers have attended two major coin shows, one in Baltimore at the Whitman Expo, and the other in Orlando at the Summer FUN Show. Dealers were rather satisfied with both events although much of the business that is currently taking place is dealer to dealer. However, many dealers have clients that are ready to purchase these coins and bullion, moving out inventory just about as quick as it came in.
The thrust of the market remains tied to bullion as Gold is well above $3,300 and Silver has jumped to nearly $39 an ounce (numbers we have not seen for over a decade in Silver). With most of the attention in numismatics focusing on bullion over the last couple of years, the demand for some rare coins has retreated somewhat. All the major auctions continue to expose this shift in demand with slightly lower prices being realized. While some rarities are always heavily bid on, some second-tier rarities have lost a few collectors due to the bullion buying opportunities. Anytime you lose potential bidders in an auction, it tends to reduce the final values of some lots. On a positive note, this also presents opportunities for collectors to take advantage of the current market. Below are some of the prices realized from the Whitman Expo featured Stack's Bowers Galleries Sale.
1870 S $10 Gold certified by PCGS AU58 with CAC and CMQ

The 1870 S $10 Gold has a high mintage by some standards of a rare coin; the original mintage was 8,000 coins. However, there are less than one hundred coins known to exist in today's market. There are only two certified in Mint State with a PCGS MS64 being the highest. There is a total of four coins certified in AU58 and just twenty-two in AU55. While there are over one hundred coins certified in all the circulated grades, it is presumed that many are resubmissions. In regard to the top certified coins of AU58 and higher, there are just six coins total. This PCGS AU58 has both the CAC and CMQ stickers attached and brought $38,400 in this sale.

1826/6 $2.5 Gold Capped Head certified by PCGS MS61 with CAC and CMQ

The 1826/6 $2.5 Gold Capped Head variety has been listed as 1826/5 for the longest time. However, it is now being recognized by experts as a repunched date and the original mintage is estimated at 760 coins, with fewer than forty coins known to exist today. There are seven coins certified in all Mint State grades with one PCGS MS63 (which brought $240,000 at FUN 2023). This coin is one of five graded as MS61 with only two sporting the CAC sticker, and it is CMQ approved as well; the final bid was $132,000. The NumisMedia CAC value is currently listed at $120,000 and will be adjusted with the next update.
