NumisMedia Weekly Market Report

Stack's Bowers Sale Echoes the Recent Trend

June 24, 2024

The bullion dominated coin market has been taking a toll on rare coin sales as we have seen some lackluster results from the last two major auctions, recently by Heritage Auctions and then Stack's Bowers Galleries this past week. The competition for rarities in major auctions has dropped off over the last year, and the last three months has been even worse with lower than expected prices realized on many of the lots in recent sales. With Gold well over $2,000 an ounce, and currently holding strong above $2,300, precious metals may continue to head the coin market for at least the time being. Below are some of the highlights from the just completed Stack's Bowers Galleries sale.
1852 O $20 Gold certified by PCGS MS61 and CAC

The 1852 O $20 Gold is quite rare in all Mint State grades. There were 190,000 originally minted but there are likely less than six hundred coins known presently. There are just fifty coins certified in all Mint State grades, the highest graded is an MS65 by NGC that last sold at a 2018 auction for $300,000. This PCGS MS61 with the CAC approval is one of two in the grade and it brought $63,000 in this sale; there are only eleven that grade higher.

1907 $20 St Gaudens High Relief certified by NGC MS66 and CMQ

The 1907 $20 Gold High Relief had a mintage of just over 11,000 coins before the mint ended production in favor of the mass-produced reduced relief variety that had a mintage of over 360,000 coins. The High Relief has a Flat Edge and Wire Edge type, with the Flat Edge the scarcer of the two. This coin is certified by NGC as MS66 and has the CMQ approval, and it brought a final price of $108,000. While there are over three hundred coins certified in MS66 and higher of the High Relief, most of the coins seen in the marketplace and auctions are the Wire Edge type. There are approximately twice as many of the Wire Edge than the Flat Edge in all grades.
