NumisMedia Weekly Market Report

Demand High for Rarities at Lower Levels

April 8, 2024

Assessing the coin market from the most recent major shows and auctions, there are buyers out there, but they are not looking to over pay for specific coins. Dealers filling want lists and adding to inventory are looking for coins at 10%-20% below current levels. Even with the metals breaking much higher (Gold is now over $2,300 an ounce), the coin market is not seeing the same increases in values. Currently, most buyers appear to be looking for bullion related coins at the cheapest premiums.

Bullion premiums have been very tight for the last few months and, for a good example of dwindling premiums, one needs to look no further than the $20 Saints. In MS60 the FMV is $2,700 and the MS64 is $2,770. That was with Gold at $2,288; even with Gold at a higher $2,330, MS64 Saints are still only $2,850 FMV. It might make sense for today's buyers to spend just a little more on the MS64's at current premiums.

The Stack's Bowers Galleries most recent sale issued further proof of a softer market, even though there were plenty of active buyers. Numerous rarities were realized at discounts of current Market levels. A year ago, many of these coins would have brought bids as much as 25% higher. The 1948 Franklin Half in PCGS MS68 Full Bell Lines with the CMQ approval (previously highlighted) brought an amazing $84,000; this differed with some of the other results. Check with Stack's Bowers Galleries for a full listing of coins sold in their Spring 2024 Auction.

1802 Heraldic Eagle Half Dime certified by PCGS AU50 and CMQ

The 1802 Half Dime is an extreme rarity with an estimated thirty-five coins known to exist. There are a total of six coins certified in all AU grades, with two at the highest certified grade of PCGS AU55. There are just fifteen coins certified in all grades by PCGS and NGC. This coin came out of the Pogue Collection back in 2015 when it realized $305,500. This sale brought in a higher final price of $324,000; the current FMV is $356,250.

1870 CC $20 Gold certified by PCGS AU50

The 1870 CC Double Eagle is by far the rarest of the Carson City Twenties with about fifty coins in existence. There is a total of thirteen in AU50, forgiving resubmissions, with the highest being a single NGC AU55, which brought a mere $414,000 back in 2009. More astounding was the PCGS AU53 which sold for $1,620,000 in a 2021 Heritage Sale. The PCGS AU50 in this sale realized $840,000.
