Whitman Baltimore Spring Expo is Next

For the last few weeks the rising metals have brought new vigor to the market. Gold has broken through and reached its all-time high, now currently around $2,170 an ounce. With the Whitman Baltimore Spring Expo just around the corner, March 21-23, dealers are extremely optimistic that the higher metals will translate into increased activity. This time of the year, along with the timing of the Baltimore Convention, typically coincides with an uptick in buying and selling, so dealers will be ready to take advantage of the higher Gold market.
Stack's Bowers Galleries will host a major auction with lots being showcased in Baltimore and the actual sale taking place the following week in California. While there are several great rarities in this sale, collectors will be keeping an eye on the extensive list of Seated Half Dollars; both Mint State and Proof coins are included. Many of these Seated Halves may not be overly rare, but some have not been offered at auction for years and will provide updated price information. 1948 Franklin Half Dollar certified by PCGS MS68 FBL and CMQ
The 1948 Franklin Half Dollar may be a common coin with an original mintage of over 3 million, but when it comes to Full Bell Lines in the higher grades, it becomes more difficult to acquire. There are a total of 74 coins certified in MS67 FBL and another 15 in MS67+ FBL, yet there is but one coin certified in MS68 FBL, and it is in this sale offered as a PCGS coin; it was previously sold at auction in an NGC holder. With just this single coin available and the standout eye-appeal, who knows what it may bring? There is currently no listing of value, soon to be rectified.

1841 $2.5 Gold certified by PCGS MS60 and CMQ
The tale of the 1841 $2.5 Gold, affectionately called the Little Princess, is a bit mysterious in that the mint has no record of how many were produced. Current records show there may be as many as 15 coins known to exist but there are only 10 coins certified by PCGS in all grades with none certified by NGC; the highest certified is PCGS MS61. The 1841 $2.5 Gold was originally thought to have been minted as Proof only, there are no mint records for the circulation strikes. To this day it is still a mystery and there are good arguments on both sides as to whether this is a Proof only issue. This PCGS MS60 also carries the esteem of the CMQ label; the current value is listed at $343,750.
