Current News and Analysis of the

United States Rare Coin Market

Pursuing True Rarities at Great Collections

October 20, 2025

Over the last couple of months, demand for high grade rarities has been strong, although values are lower than the previous highs of the last few years. Some declining prices can be attributed to the soaring values of metals over the last year; coin buyers have shifted their interest from rare coins to these profit-making metals. With Gold well over $4,000 an ounce and Silver piercing the $50 mark, who can blame them.

The lower prices do allow some buyers to get back into market, with many true rarities seemingly more affordable at this time. Availability is the key when it comes to rarity; if the coin being offered is one-of-a-kind or is not likely to appear on the market again for many years, then the competitiveness of the buyers is increased exponentially, and at the end of the sale, the final price is a very good indication of true value in today's market.

The weekly auctions hosted by Great Collections are a sure way to find and purchase rare coins at reasonable prices, and they continue to attract buyers and sellers. Early Bust Coinage has been in high demand at Great Collections, and buyers are incredibly competitive for higher grade coins that have minimal populations. For the Gold buyers, there is still extraordinarily strong interest in early rare U.S. Gold coins as can be seen in the GC auctions every week. Below are just a few examples of the variety of the Great Collections offerings, from Half Cents through $20 Gold (and up), there are coins for every collector.

1796 Liberty Cap Half Cent with Pole certified by PCGS MS66 BN and CAC

The 1796 Half Cent had an original mintage of just 1,390 coins, which includes both Pole and no Pole varieties. There are less than twenty coins certified in all Mint State grades for the 'with Pole' variety, and less than seventy coins certified in all circulated grades; MS66 is the highest certified by all major grading services. This PCGS MS66 Brown with the CAC label realized $382,500 in the September 28th GC Sunday sale. This coin came from the Semper Fi Collection of 1796 Rarities.
