Current News and Analysis of the

United States Rare Coin Market

Summer FUN with Heritage

July 20, 2026

The Summer FUN Show was quite typical for the time of year. The summer months have a slower pace, and many dealers are sellers rather than buyers. Precious metals continue to lead market activity, but lower prices have even slowed that market somewhat. Rare coin trading has also been somewhat inhibited by the lack of fresh material which has been an ongoing theme. Buyers and sellers seem to be waiting out this downturn until the next jumpstart in the marketplace.

The host auctioneer for the Summer FUN Show was Heritage Auctions, featuring their Signature Sale. This sale included a large selection of early $5 Gold with nearly twenty high-grade lots of pre-1818 coinage. Results exhibit a clear range of values, for example, the 1795 $5 Gold Small Eagle in AU up to MS62. A $5 Gold Small Eagle in PCGS AU53 realized $43,920, while an NGC AU58 brought $57,340. The highest grade in this sale was an NGC MS62 which sold for $94,550. The prices realized are slightly discounted from previous levels, but the market demand is still there for the classic rarities. Check all the prices realized from this Heritage FUN Signature Sale; below are some of the more important results.

1888 $10 Gold certified by PCGS PR64 Cameo

The Proof 1888 $10 Gold had an original mintage of seventy-five coins with just over twenty coins known to exist today according to research and population records. This PR64 Cameo certified by PCGS is one of three coins in this grade, while NGC has a like amount reported; there are just a total of three coins certified higher with the + designation. The current FMV for the PR64 Cameo is only $41,880 but will be reevaluated this week because of the $85,400 price realized in this sale. There have been very few reported sales of this elusive date in any grade over the last fifteen years, thus indicating rarity in all grades.

1888 $10 Gold PCGS PR64 Cameo

1888 $10 Gold PCGS PR64 Cameo sold for $85,400 at Heritage Auctions FUN U.S. Coins Signature Auction in Dallas, Texas, July  16-18,  2026
