James A Stack Sr. Collection Sales Realize $28+ Million

February 9, 2026

There have been some dramatic ups and downs in the metals market in the last few weeks. Big swings in direction make for some scary moments for investors, especially when trading in paper contracts where margin calls can be devastating. Most rare coin dealers recommend that you always control your precious metal positions with actual product in your hands, not relying on a second or third party to hold your investment. Gold had reached the $5,500 mark a couple of weeks ago only to fall back to around $4,600; Gold is currently at $5,059 and Silver is $83. Silver had climbed to $120 an ounce before it corrected to the current level.

The second part of the sale of the James A Stack Sr. Collection took place last week at the offices of Stack's Bowers Galleries in California. This collection was met with superb enthusiasm by dealers and collectors as bidding was extremely competitive for both parts with the combined sales totaling more than $28 million. Collectors had to be delighted with the offering of Private and Territorial Minted Gold Coins from the early 1800's, an elite group and one of the largest of its kind, it will be nearly impossible to replicate in the future. Also represented were many of the rarest U.S. Gold coins with an emphasis on the $10 Gold Indian series. See some of our selected highlights below and check the Stack's Bowers prices realized for complete details.

1798 $5 Gold Capped Bust Small Eagle certified by PCGS AU53 with CAC and CMQ

The 1798 $5 Gold Small Eagle had an original mintage of just one-hundred coins; there are only seven known survivors with two of those in the Smithsonian Institution. Three of the coins are certified by PCGS as AU53, including the coin from this sale that realized $2,820,000. One of the other coins in the same grade brought $1,980,000 in a Heritage Sale in August of 2023, but did not have the CAC or CMQ approvals. There are two additional higher graded coins in AU55, one by PCGS and another by NGC. The last reported sale for the PCGS AU55 was by Heritage at the January 2025 FUN Sale for $3,000,000. This date is also important to numismatic lore as it was once listed as the most valuable coin in the world in 1912....and it was for the coin in this sale.
