NumisMedia Weekly Market Report

Current News and Analysis of the

United States Rare Coin Market

Another Day, Another Dollar

January 19, 2026

Heritage Auctions hosted the Official Auction for the FUN Show as they have done for many decades. Auction lots were available for viewing at the show with the actual sale taking place at their Dallas offices a week later which has now become the customary practice for major auctions. The highlights from this sale present an extensive list of U.S. Gold with many of the high-end coins approved by CAC.
The top attraction from the 2026 FUN Auction was one of the most famous coins in numismatic history: the 1804 Dollar. This Class III is certified as PCGS PR58 and it sold for $3,538,000. It is not very often when two 1804 Dollars are sold within a month; the other was featured in our recent article The King Brings $6 Million. Below are some of the other highlights from the Heritage FUN Show Auction.
1879 $4 Gold Coiled Hair certified by PCGS PR66 Cameo

The $4 Gold Stella is one of the most prized and sought after denominations in U.S. coinage. The Coiled Hair $4 Gold is even more in demand because they are exceedingly rare in the marketplace. The 1879 had just twenty originally minted and the 1880 had just ten minted and is also extremely rare. This 1879 $4 Gold Coiled Hair in PCGS PR66 Cameo, once housed in the collection of Ed Trompeter, realized $1,464,000 in this sale. The population reports show twelve coins in all grades with the highest certified as PR66 Cameo; all three certified by NGC. Heritage sold one of those in a 2005 auction for $655,500.
