Competition Varies for Top Tier Coins

Great Collections offers a variety of rarities, many that are infrequently seen in the marketplace, including some finest known coins. However, some of the best finds in the GC Sunday auctions are coins that are one or two steps below the highest graded.
Three high graded 1919 Lincoln Cents, all certified by PCGS as Red, were recently offered in various Great Collections Sunday auctions with notable results. The finest Wheat Cent certified, the 1919 Lincoln Cent in MS69 Red, with CAC approval, was available at a starting bid of $385,000 in a March GC Sunday auction. But the real bidding battle was for the MS68 (Jan 11) and MS67 (Feb 15), selling for $15,812 and $1,699 respectively, both seemingly bargains compared to the MS69 asking price. Even though the competition has increased for these coins at auction, they are still selling at or below current price levels, but more importantly they are typically way more reasonably priced compared to the finest known. As for the MS69, we believe it is still available.
1925 S $20 Gold St Gaudens certified by PCGS MS66
The 1925 S $20 Gold St Gaudens has a rather high mintage that is not typical for a top rarity. There were over 3.7 million coins minted but it is likely that most of those were melted when the government recalled Gold in 1933. Today's survival of approximately 1,500 coins is a better gauge of this coin's rarity. There are less than four hundred coins certified in all circulated grades, with just a little over five hundred in all Mint State grades. Yet, there are just eleven coins certified in MS65 and higher grades with only one PCGS MS68 being the highest certified to date. The current FMV for the MS65 coin is $299,000, so it is no surprise that the PCGS MS66 sold on April 12th brought $394,875. The price charts for the 1925 S $20 St Gaudens have been adjusted up in the MS66 grade many times since 2020, and it will rise again because of this sale.
