NumisMedia Weekly Market Report
Great Collections Bringing Top Dollar
July 15, 2024
Great Collections of Irvine, California has gained an immense amount of market share and respectability over the last fourteen years, and their weekly auctions have been a great source for classic rarities. While some ultra rarity values have backed off recently with seemingly less competitive buyers in the market, Great Collections manages to continually bring top dollar in their weekly sales, and the many dedicated high-end collectors participating creates some very healthy competition.
While various areas of the coin market have been trending downward, Great Collections has been auctioning thousands of U.S. coins with many high valued rarities commanding very competitive prices. There are usually plenty of Early Gold rarities listed for sale, which appears to be one of their specialties. We have selected a few highlights from some of the recent Sunday night auctions by Great Collections.
1828 Capped Bust Quarter certified by PCGS PR65
The 1828 Proof Capped Bust Quarter is an extremely rare issue with just twelve coins minted. It is estimated that there may be as few as six coins known, even though there are ten coins certified by PCGS and NGC combined. This 1828 PCGS PR65, sold on June 23, brought $118,125; the current FMV is at $96,560. This one looks as nice as some of the higher graded PR66 coins.

1798/7 $10 Gold Capped Bust Large Eagle 9x4 Stars certified by PCGS MS61
With less than one hundred known out of an original mintage of nine hundred, this 1798/7 $10 Gold, with 9x4 Stars on the obverse, is quite rare in Mint State. There are fifty-two coins certified in circulated grades by the two services, but only twelve in all Mint State grades; there are just two in the highest grade of MS63, one for each service. This PCGS MS61 in the GC Sunday auction on July 14 realized $149,125; the FMV is at $162,500. Also worth mentioning, the other variety for this date, the 7x6 Stars, had an original mintage of 842 coins with only thirty or fewer known to exist, and has only five coins certified in all Mint State grades.
