Stack's Bowers Highlights Upcoming Whitman Expo

March 13, 2023

Gold was on the brink of breaking below $1,800 an ounce last week when the news of banking closures created a massive runup in the Gold price. This morning Gold has passed the $1,900 mark and Silver is up $1.25 at $21.81.
The Whitman Coin Expo begins this week in Baltimore with Stack's Bowers Galleries hosting the official auction. Lot viewing will be at the show March 14-17 and the auctions will be held the following two weeks in Costa Mesa, California. There are plenty of top rarities offered and the Fairmount Collection of U.S. Gold in $5, $10, & $20 denominations is sure to attract a lot of buyers for coins that are not readily available in the current market. Some of the many potential highlights from the Stack's Bowers sales appear below.
1853 Seated Half Dime with Arrows certified by PCGS PR64 and CAC

With an original mintage of just five coins, and possibly only three known, the 1853 with Arrows Half Dime in Proof is a true rarity. There are only two certified in the PR64 grade, both PCGS coins. There is one certified by NGC in the same grade, but it is since presumed to have crossed over to PCGS. The population reports indicate one other coin certified at NGC as PR61. In a Stack's Bowers sale in 2018, a PR64 with the CAC sticker sold for $96,000.

1886 $20 Gold certified by PCGS PR67 Deep Cameo

There were 106 $20 Gold coins originally minted in Proof in 1886; however, there are less than 50 total in all Proof grades certified by both services combined. The majority of those are certified in Proof or Proof Cameo. There are only 12 coins certified in all grades of Deep Cameo with the PR67 the highest certified. In 2017, Heritage sold this date and grade for $305,000. The current NumisMedia FMV for the PR67 is listed at $331,250.
