The Perfect Collection Auctioned by Legend

The Legend Rare Coin Auctions Regency Auction 54 was conducted in conjunction with the most recent PCGS Member's Only Show in San Diego. There were several high grade collections in this sale including the Perfect Collection of Capped Bust Half Dollars. This collection had 33 high grade rarities, some of them dominate the highlight table below.
1815/2 Bust Half Dollar certified by PCGS MS64+ and CAC
Overdate rarities are not always popular in every market; but when in demand, buyers become aggressive, and even more so when they are near the top of the grade spectrum. This 1815/2 Bust Half Dollar brought $105,750. There are only 38 coins certified in all Mint State grades, there is one other coin (besides this one) certified in MS64+ by PCGS, and only three certified higher. The PCGS MS66 is the highest certified and was last sold by Heritage in 2012 for $182,125; it was listed back then as NGC MS66+ but it no longer appears in the population report as such.

1823/2 Capped Bust Quarter certified by PCGS AU55
The 1823/2 overdate is an important rarity for this series. With only 30-40 known survivors from an original mintage of 17,800, it is a very difficult coin to acquire in higher AU grades. There has been only one reported sale for a Mint State coin, an NGC MS61 that sold for $188,000 in 2014, but it does not appear to be listed in the population report any longer. There are only three coins certified higher than AU55: two in AU58, both CAC, and one in AU58+ by PCGS. The Pogue coin in PCGS AU58 brought $246,750 in early 2015; the PCGS AU55 in this sale realized $146,875. The FMV is currently listed at $126,000 and will be updated in the coming week.
