NumisMedia Weekly Market Report
FUN Active, Heritage Auction Next
January 10, 2022
The year ended on a positive note with an unusually active Holiday Season. Coin dealers normally take some time off to spend with their families this time of year and the coin market typically moves to a crawl with the exception of an increase in gift type sales. However, many dealers were open for business, sales and purchases did not drop off, and the teletype systems were much more active than in past years. But this was nothing compared to the volume most dealers experienced this past year. Considering the poor economy and the fact that many dealers had quite a bit of down time throughout the year, most dealers reported a record amount of rare coin and bullion activity.
Even with the Orange County Convention pandemic guidelines, the FUN Show was an overall success despite the fact that many dealers stayed home because of the restrictions and terrible flight conditions and cancelations. The FUN Show results are usually a strong indicator of where the rare coin market is headed, and most dealers reported a very strong show. Dealers seemed to be pleased that some dealers stayed home because there was more business for them. Bullion still leads the industry with its immense volume.
With the current Covid situation, the official auction conducted by Heritage Auctions was delayed and will take place at their offices in Dallas this week, January 12-16. Lot viewing was still available at the FUN Show. There are numerous important rarities in this sale which is highlighted by the Bob R. Simpson Collection Part VII. Pre-sale bidding activity appears very aggressive, especially for the top rarities.
1795 $10 Gold 9 Leaves certified by PCGS MS63+ and CAC
This particular 1795 $10 Gold 9 Leaves is the finest known of the variety. It previously sold in a 2015 Stack's Bowers Sale for $1,057,500; this is the Pogue coin and is very likely to surpass this previous record price. There are a total of only nine Mint State coins certified by PCGS and NGC combined. Further, there are just seventeen coins certified by both services in all circulated grades. The current CAC listed value in MS63 is $1,100,000 and, for comparison, in AU50 the CAC is valued at $158,000.

1796 $2.5 Gold No Stars certified by PCGS MS62+ and CAC
The 1796 $2.5 Gold has a combined estimated population of 150 to 175 for both types, Stars and No Stars. Both are extremely rare with values well over $125,000 in AU50. When available in the higher grades of Mint State, the bidding can get very competitive. The current value in MS62+ CAC is $600,000 for the No Stars with pre-sale bidding already above $900,000. There are only eighteen coins certified in all Mint State grades and only four listed higher than this current offering. The highest auction sale of this variety was $1,725,000 for the only PCGS MS65 way back in January of 2008.

1879 $20 Gold Liberty Head Quintuple Stella Pattern certified by PCGS PR63 Cameo
This coin is known as the Quintuple Stella and is one of only five known examples with one housed in the collection of the Smithsonian Institution. While it is a $20 Liberty reverse, the obverse is that of the 1879 Stella. The grading services have certified six coins total in PR62 through PR64, however, it is certain that there is an overlap of resubmissions. This coin previously sold in a Heritage FUN Sale in 2007 for $862,500 and should realize a much higher final bid in this current market atmosphere. Below are some of the other potential highlights listed in the Heritage Auctions FUN Sale with final bidding at their Dallas headquarters.
