Finest Set of Early Dollars Featured in Regency 41

October 5, 2020

The Bruce Morelan Collection will be featured this week at the Legend Rare Coin Auctions Regency Auction 41 in conjunction with the PCGS Members' Only Show at the Bellagio in Las Vegas. The sale of the Morelan Collection is an exceptional opportunity for serious collectors to add extreme rarities to their collections. Included is the finest set of Early Dollars ever assembled which contains two of the most valuable coins ever sold.

1794 Flowing Hair Dollar certified by PCGS SP66 and CAC

This date was the first Dollar ever struck by the U.S. Mint. This coin previously sold at auction for a record-breaking $10,000,000; it is the only Specimen coin certified by either service and it also has the CAC approval.

1804 Draped Bust Dollar certified by PCGS PR65

This well-known Dollar is the third finest known; there were only 8 originally minted. Many know this coin as the "King" of all U.S. rare coins, and it is also referred to as the Dexter Specimen identified by the small "D" punched on the reverse. The auction house has estimated its sale at about $4,000,000. There are a total of 15 coins in this set of Early Dollars with the 1804 the final piece.

The metals have remained strong, sustaining the higher levels over the past few weeks; with every dip there seems to be a rebound. With Silver now maintaining at over the $24 mark, premiums have drifted lower as buying and selling appears to be more in balance with a plentiful amount of product available.

Gold is currently at $1,914.50 in morning trading and Silver is at $24.30. Proof one ounce Gold Eagles in the OGP are trading at about $2,050 to $2,075 among dealers. Proof Silver Eagles are steady at $46. Bags of 90% Silver coins are wholesaling at $17,175, while VG+ Silver Dollars are trading at $23,225 by the bag of one thousand.
