NumisMedia Weekly Market Report
Rarities Still Commanding Strong Prices
May 20, 2019
While most major auctions garner the support of dealers and the public attending numismatic events, Legend Rare Coin Auctions has managed to attract a tremendous following for their specialized sales without the benefit of a major convention. Legend's Regency Auction 32 was conducted last week at the PCGS Members only show in New Orleans. This sale was highlighted by the visually stunning SUPERNOVA 1857 S $20 Gold recovered from the S.S. Central America, the finest known coin of this date with a PCGS MS67 label in addition to the CAC sticker. The fabulous toning alone was enough to create an awe-inspiring final bid of $282,000. In a better market, this coin could have reached $400,000 or beyond.

Legend also sold a 1795 Flowing Hair Dollar with Silver Plug graded by PCGS as AU55 and approved by CAC which realized $129,250. This coin is extremely rare and comes on the market very infrequently; there are only 4 coins in this grade and this coin is the only one that has the CAC sticker. There are 3 coins certified higher with the PCGS MS65+ the finest thus far. Many of the planchets for the 1795 Dollars were underweight so a silver plug was inserted in an effort to maintain proper consistency in the silver weight. Below are some of the other highlights from Legend's Regency Auction 32.

With Gold considerably down compared to this time last week, the U.S. Gold charts are showing a considerable amount of adjustments; in this morning's trading, Gold bullion is currently at $1,275.70. Twenty Libs and Saints are trading at $1,265 in AU50 among dealers with very narrow spreads to the MS60 coins at $1,290 Market. Although the 1907 High Relief $20 Gold is very rare, they are available in quantity through several major dealers and prices are very competitive. Note that Market prices are lower in MS61 through MS65 with the latter down to $36,250. It looks like it's a great time to be a buyer at these discounted levels.
