Platinum Night Highlights Central States

April 23, 2018

Heritage Auctions will host the official sale at the Central States Convention in Schaumburg, Illinois this week. Platinum Night will be full of rarities across several series and one of the highlights will be the 1796/5 $5 Gold Small Eagle in PCGS MS62 with the CAC sticker. There are just 7 coins grading higher with MS65 the highest. Also, this is one of just two coins approved by CAC in the MS62 grade. The current Market is at $135,000 and our CAC value is listed at $194,000.

Also available, the 1854 S $2˝ Gold in PCGS VF35 is so rare that we do not have it listed in any grade. This is one of three coins certified in this grade and auction sales in the last seven years have been between $253,000 and $282,000. This coin had an original mintage of 246 coins but there are only 11 to 12 known. Below are some of the other highlights from this sale.

This week’s Moderns Wholesale Market Dealer Price Guide adjustments are sparse in Modern Lincoln Cents through Presidential Dollars. This is a segment of the market that is somewhat ignored, especially for coins valued at $20 or less; only when the highest grades with low-pops are offered are buyers aggressive.

There seems to be an increase in the number of dealers involved with Modern Signature Coins. NumisMedia prices for Signature coins can be found online at our Collector Price Guide under ‘Signature Series’.

The metals are getting hit hard as Gold is down over $10 in morning trading; Gold is currently at $1,323.50 and Silver is at $16.65. Buy/Sell spreads have become so tight that dealers will need to shift to high volume deals to make any money in this market.
