Rare Double Die Cents Attract Strong Bids

The poor weather in Baltimore did not keep the bidders away from the Stack's Bowers Galleries Auction at the just completed Whitman Baltimore Expo. Rare Lincoln Cents have a strong following which was very apparent with two Double Die Cent sales. The 1958 Lincoln Cent with the Double Die Obverse in PCGS MS64 Red settled at $336,000 after very aggressive bidding. This is one of just three known examples of this variety; the other two are an MS64 Red and an MS65 Red.

The metals made a nice run this past week with Gold approaching the $1,350 mark. In this morning's trading, Gold is up to $1,354.50 and Silver is at $16.65. One ounce Proof Gold Eagles in the OGP are trading at $1,390 and Proof Silver Eagles are at $40 each. There has not been much change in VG+ Silver Dollar bags, now at $22,025.
