Downward Drift Continues for Generic Gold

December 11, 2017

Heritage Auctions held their annual December Dallas Signature Sale last week and, while it may not have had the depth of most of their sales, results showed that there is still plenty of buying power in the market. One of the highlights was the 1866 S $20 Gold No Motto in NGC AU58; rarely seen in Mint State, this near miss coin brought $72,000, selling at a discount of our previous Market price. The highest known grade is an NGC MS62. Another rarity from the Twenty Dollar Gold series, the 1879 O in PCGS AU53 brought $66,000. Again this is a date where very few Mint State coins exist. Below are some of the other highlights from this sale.

The Gold market remains weak and generic U.S. Gold has dropped further. In this week’s HD Wholesale Market Dealer Price Guide, prices are continuing to drift downward, especially in the Gold charts. Ten Dollar Liberty Gold prices are down across the board, Fine through MS62. The Market for the MS62 is now at a lower $665. Ten Dollar Indian prices have also declined in the same grades, with the MS62 now at $720.
Twenty Dollar Liberty Gold prices are down from Fine all the way through MS64; the MS64 has dropped to $1,500 wholesale. There is only a $100 difference between the AU58 at $1,260 and the MS63 at $1,360. Saints are following the same trend with Fines at $1,230 and AU58 declining to just $1,275. The Mint State grades are all lower up to and including MS65; the MS65 is now down to $1,550 Market.
