Buffalo Nickels Reveal Collector Demand

June 27, 2016

Britain leaving the EU sent shockwaves throughout financial markets with Gold advancing up over $100 an ounce before settling at a modest $60 increase at $1,315. This morning Gold is currently at $1,320 an ounce and Silver is $17.70. With higher bullion, one ounce Proof Gold Eagles in original government packaging has increased to $1,530 for the $100 coin. Proof Silver Eagles are unchanged so far at $50 each.

Not all of today’s collectors are looking for the security of bullion coins. In this market, dealers need to move inventory quickly in order to make profits, and collectors are taking advantage, searching out bargains and looking for coins that have low populations for the grade. Highest grade for the date coins are in high demand, and combined with low populations, many Buffalo Nickels are rising in price. While there are some minor downward adjustments in this week’s LD Wholesale Market Dealer Price Guide, there are numerous advances within the Buffalo Nickel series. Below is a list of Buffalo Nickels that have increased in the last few weeks.

DateGradeCurrent Market
1913 TII Buffalo NickelMS67$3,950
1915 Buffalo NickelMS66$600
1917 D Buffalo NickelMS64$1,025
1920 S Buffalo NickelMS64$2,750
1921 S Buffalo NickelMS64$3,575
1923 Buffalo NickelMS67$6,050
1924 Buffalo NickelMS67$8,525
1924 D Buffalo NickelMS65$3,450
1924 S Buffalo NickelMS64$4,925
1926 S Buffalo NickelMS64$13,250
1927 D Buffalo NickelMS65$5,450

The Buffalo Nickel series is known for coins with weak strikes; the higher prices that dealers and collectors are willing to pay are for well-struck coins that have eye appeal. Soft strikes will bring discounted prices.

This week’s Half Dimes chart shows a mix of increases and decreases with the latter being more dominant. This is a series that is very cyclical, and when the market is down, demand is likely to fade somewhat. The 1795 is lower in MS65 at $37,250 Market and the 1840 O with Drapery in MS64 is down to $26,250. On the upside are the 1860 O in MS67 and the 1865 in MS68, with increases to $4,950 and $8,500, respectively.
