NumisMedia Weekly Market Report

Buyers Looking for CAC and + Coins

June 13, 2016

Public traffic at the Long Beach Expo was excellent to steady for most of the show. Metal prices held throughout the week, and dealers took advantage, increasing sales to above average levels. Even better, the metals are still strong as this week begins with Gold up over $9, now at $1,283.50. Silver is $17.42 and Platinum is down slightly at $990.50.
As the market continues to decline for some series, it looks like dealers and collectors are heavily pursuing CAC and + graded coins. Many dealers believe that the average coins in the market are creating the declines over the last year and a half. At the same time, this means that many of the older certified coins are being submitted for reexamination for CAC approval or a + designation. As you can see from the Heritage Auctions Long Beach Sale, many of the coins sold at premiums were CAC or +. Some of the higher valued coins that do not have the premium designations sold for discounts of current Market levels.

Values remain very fluid depending on the series, grade, and demand for specific dates. In this week's HD Wholesale Market Dealer Price Guide there are quite a few increases for Bust Halves, many from the results of auctions, where the demand is very strong for top rarities. Some of these dates have not traded in many years, and when three or more advanced collectors get involved in the bidding, prices can skyrocket. The 1836 Reeded Edge is a very tough coin in high grade; there are only two coins certified in MS65 and the Market has increased to $53,500. The 1837 Half has a total of five coins in the highest grade of MS67 and the Market climbed to $70,000. For the 1839 O, also in MS67 and a very rare coin, the new Market value is up to $160,000; there are only two certified in this grade.
