Bullion Still Attracting Buyers, Rare Coins Slightly Lower

April 4, 2016

The just completed Whitman Baltimore Expo raised the usual concerns about the market, and that is, not enough retail, not enough wholesale, not enough public attendance. Yet, when all was said and done, many dealers reported having a good show.

Based on Mint sales, modern bullion coins are selling at a record pace and most dealers are participating in this area of the market. Gold and Silver are down slightly in early morning trading with Gold currently at $1,217.20 and Silver at $14.97.

Stack’s Bowers Galleries conducted a major sale at Baltimore Whitman Expo with a large variety of rarities. Included was a 1795 Draped Bust Dollar in PCGS MS63+ that sold for $117,500; this is the only coin certified with the + designation and there are only 21 coins grading higher.

One of the rarest coins available in this sale was the 1808 Capped Bust $2 ˝ Gold in PCGS MS61; this coin brought an amazing $223,250. While this grade has eleven coins certified, there are only twelve grading higher with MS65 the highest.

For many observers the highlight of this sale was the 1799 Capped Bust $10 Gold in PCGS MS66 with the CAC sticker; it sold for $493,500 and it is the highest certified for this date.

Also worth noting, Stack’s Bowers is now listing the reserve price for a coin that does not sell in their prices realized. This makes it easier for potential buyers to decide if they want to make an offer on a coin that did not sell during the auction. Below are some of the highlights from this sale.

This week’s LD Wholesale Market Dealer Price Guide lists an assortment of adjustments in most series from Lincoln Cents through Standing Liberty Quarters. Half Cents and Large Cents are fairly steady with minor changes reported. We are still updating prices from the just completed auction which will have some influence over the next few weeks. In the meantime, Seated Half Dimes and Seated Dimes are relatively steady with some moving slightly lower. Most of the changes are less than 10%, indicating that these coins are selling at the new levels.
