NumisMedia Weekly Market Report
Bullion Coins in Demand; Half Cents Showing Strength
July 27, 2015
With the lower metal prices, there seems to be a renewed interest in modern mint products. The U.S. Mint has seen a large increase in sales for Silver and Gold coins. The sale of Silver Eagles had been suspended due to high demand and a lack of Silver in inventory. The U.S. Mint announced today that Silver Eagles are available once again. We are also monitoring an upturn in offerings to buy and sell bullion coins on the Teletype systems.
While the market remains lethargic for most common collector coins dated after the 1930's, we are finding more dealers looking to buy and sell better date coins through their teletype messages. The hundreds of dealers on the Teletype systems can be a major benefit to other dealers, using the coins listed as an expanded inventory to offer to their customers.
With the rising demand for better or rare date coins, some dates have seen remarkable percentage increases to prices. The GSA 1880 CC Rev '78 in MS65 P/L is up to $11,090, a jump of 49.06%. This is an extremely rare coin and Registry collectors are very aggressive in this series.
Another coin showing upward movement is the 1950 Lincoln Cent in Cameo PR68 Red; the new FMV is $2,280, up 17.53% in the last month. There are only five coins certified by PCGS and NGC with none grading higher.
Below are several more dates that have shown positive results over the last 30 days as listed in the NumisMedia 500.
Date/Denomination | Grade | Current FMV | % Increase |
1936 Lincoln Cent TI | PR66 RB | $3,030 | +12.79% |
1867 S Seated Dime | AU55 | $1,650 | +12.24% |
1950 D/S Washington Quarter | MS64 | $1,160 | +12.12% |
1927 S Mercury Dime | MS66 | $2,810 | +11.11% |
1903 $10 Gold | PR60 | $5,630 | +9.76% |
1842 D $5 Gold Small Date | AU55 | $5,440 | +9.43% |
1887 Indian Cent | MS65 Red | $1,810 | +9.43% |
1855 Seated Quarter W/A | MS65 | $9,690 | +8.39% |
1844 O $5 Gold | AU58 | $2,560 | +7.89% |
The ANA World's Fair of Money is just a few short weeks away. The show and all of the educational events will be held at the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center in Rosemont, Ill from August 11-15. Heritage Auctions and Stack's Bowers Galleries will each host a separate sale at the ANA, and with all the rarities included, some new sales records are expected. We will list many of the highlights in upcoming weekly market reports.
The current LD Wholesale Market Dealer Price Guide shows a variety of adjustments throughout. Copper collectors tend to be very educated about Half Cents and Large Cents and the many varieties that may be available. While there is a stronger base of Large Cent collectors, we are finding many Half Cents that have been underpriced and therefore are exhibiting higher Market prices this week. The 1804 Spiked Chin Half Cent is higher in a few grades with the MS63 BN now up to $2,825 Market; also, the 1809 9 over 6 is higher in MS62 BN at $1,175.
