NumisMedia Weekly Market Report

Heritage Long Beach Sale Realizes $13.4 Million

September 8, 2014

The metals have continued to fall and confidence in bullion related products has stagnated the precious metals market. The new Kennedy Proof Gold coin has not been as active as expected in the secondary market. This has caused sellers to discount coins in order to move inventory. The most recent offers to sell Proof 70 coins have been as low as $1,325 wholesale. In morning trading, Gold is $1,252.80 and Silver is $18.96. Proof Gold Eagles are trading at $1,470 per ounce and Proof Silver Eagles are $49.50.

The Long Beach Expo appeared to be busy with solid attendance throughout even if the lower metals reduced potential sales. Most dealers worked the floor with modest success but locating fresh material at reasonable levels was difficult.

The Heritage Auctions Signature Sale brought $13.4 million, which contained nearly 800 CAC stickered coins and almost 300 with the + designation. Premium coins continue to bring premium prices, especially for known rarities with low populations. The 1792 Silver Center Cent in NGC MS61+ Brown was the highlight of the sale at $705,000. There are only three coins known that grade higher of this variety.
