Market Prices Rising for True Rarities

Gold has built a new base above $1,300 over the last couple of weeks. Prices have been relatively steady in the $1,310 to $1,320 range and the outlook is for higher prices in the near term. The premium for Proof Gold Eagles has increased with demand and currently the one ounce coins are trading at $1,545. Proof Silver Eagles are unchanged at $50 and 90% silver bags are trading at $15,765. Circulated Silver Dollars are wholesaling at $27,550 per bag of one thousand.
Last week Heritage Auctions hosted Part I of the Eugene H. Gardner Collection in New York City and it could not have gone any better. With $19.6 million prices realized this sale showed how important original toning and eye appeal can be to a long time collection. Among the highlights was the 1796 Bust Dime certified by PCGS as MS67. The CAC sticker undoubtedly helped this gem rarity realize $881,250. Another great coin sold was the 1876 CC Twenty Cent in PCGS MS64 which hammered for $470,000. This coin had a previous Market price of $340,000 and will surely advance. There are only 8 coins certified by PCGS and NGC combined with only 9 coins certified higher. Below are just a few of the many highlights from this important sale. This week’s HD Wholesale Market Dealer Price Guide unveils a massive number of changes throughout all the series. The majority of changes are advances, especially in the Half Dollar charts. The 1803 Small 3 in MS62 is higher at $46,500 Market and the 1817/3 in MS63 is up to $9,850. Numerous Seated Halves are higher in grades MS64 to MS66, including the 1842 in MS66, 1848 O MS66, 1851 and 51 O in MS66, and 1857 S in MS65 & MS66.
Demand for Early Twenty Dollar Liberty Gold is persistent and many of the Type I & II coins are higher this week. The 1850 O in MS61 is higher at $81,500 and the 1886 has increased in all grades from VF through MS61. There are at least 80 other increases for Type I & II’s in grades VF through MS63.
