NumisMedia Weekly Market Report
Gardner Collection Hits the Block
June 23, 2014
Gold and Silver have been moving higher this past week, just in time for the Whitman Baltimore Expo. Concerns over the Middle East conflict, the price of oil, and inflation showing signs of rising, all point to higher metals in the near future. With Gold at $1,316.50 in morning trading the one ounce Proof Gold Eagle is trading at $1,520, while the Proof Silver Eagle is right at $50.
Heritage Auctions is hosting Part I of the Eugene H. Gardner Collection in New York City today. Formed over five decades, this first sale includes many early Type coins, the majority of which are intensely toned as original coins tend to be. There are a massive number of potential highlights in this unreserved sale.
To begin with, the 1793 Wreath Cent Vine and Bars is certified by PCGS as MS68. The coin has excellent eye appeal and to many experts looks as if it was minted yesterday. We have the coin listed at $400,000 Market.

The latest LD Wholesale Market Dealer Price Guide shows a variety of increases throughout Half Cents to Standing Liberty Quarters. Of special interest is Buffalo Nickels with numerous advances in grades MS63 through MS67. The 1915 D in MS66 is up to $3,925 Market and the 1915 S is now $3,575 in the same grade. The 1918 S is always a tough coin in the upper grades with only 50 coins certified in MS65 and higher; there are only two certified in MS66 with none higher. The 1918 S jumped to $15,350 in MS65. Other dates on the rise include 1921 S MS64, 1924 S MS63 & 64, 1925 S MS63 & 64, and the 1926 S in MS64.
Although there are not a lot of changes in Full Band Mercury Dimes, they appear to be attractive to several buyers at current levels. Many of these dates have been stagnant for a while as dealers have been sitting on inventories. This week the 1918 D is higher in MS66 FB, now at $81,500 Market. There are only four coins certified in this grade and none higher. The 1918 S in MS65 FB is up to $5,175 and the 1920 S in the same grade rose to $5,125. Other dates showing upward movement are the 1921 in MS64 & 65 FB, 1921 S MS63FB, 1926 S & 1927 S in MS65 FB.
