NumisMedia Weekly Market Report
Major Auctions Bring Out the Best
February 3, 2014
The public was very active for most of the Long Beach Expo and dealers were eager to report that 'Long Beach is thriving' once again. Dollars and Gold seemed to top the list of trading activity, along with nice Type coins, when you could find them. There is a long list of advances this week for Morgan Dollars, especially for better dates in high grades. Below is a list of some of the more active dates in Morgan Dollars.

Ira & Larry Goldberg hosted the Pre-Long Beach Auction which contained the Missouri Cabinet Collection. The sale realized $18,259,269. This collection included the PCGS Registry current and all-time finest of its kind collection of United States Half Cents. It is the only collection of certified U.S. Half Cents that contained every variety of Half Cent struck for circulation, and every variety struck only in proof. This is the first time a Half Cent has ever traded for over a million dollars, and there were two of them. A 1794 Liberty Cap with Pole variety grading PCGS MS67 RB sold for $1,150,000. This is the only one certified in this grade by PCGS and there are none higher. The second coin was the 1811 Classic Head graded by PCGS as MS66 RB; it realized $1,121,250. For complete prices realized please contact Ira & Larry Goldberg Coins & Collectibles.
For the first time in many years Heritage Auctions did not host a sale at the Long Beach Expo. However, they do have one in New York this week, February 3-5. It is hosted at their New York offices and includes many classic rarities. One of the highlights is sure to be the 1855 S Seated Half Dollar graded by NGC as PR65. This is one of just three known coins and will attract some very competitive bidding among advanced collectors. There is also an extremely rare 1870 CC $20 Gold that is certified by ANACS as cleaned, AU details. This coin is so rare that it will still bring a strong six-figure bid. The following list of coins are more highlights from this sale.
