NumisMedia Weekly Market Report
October 15, 2012
Market Active in Various Series
Dealers are meeting in Dallas this week for the ANA National Money Show. So far the metals are not cooperating as Gold is down over $18 and Silver is under $33. However, buyers have been very active of late and dealers will see this as an opportunity to add to inventory at lower levels. Heritage will host a major auction which is sure to attract some active bidding. It can't hurt that it is in their backyard.
The last few weeks brought an upswing in sales for better date and rare coins. Collectors are taking advantage of the small availability of rarely-seen coins that have come on the market as of late. The 1875 $2 ½ Gold rose to $26,250 in MS61 and $29,500 in MS62. Also of note, the 1865 climbed to $19,500 in AU55. Branch Mint U.S. Gold is very strong with the 1846 C $5 in MS64 now up to $70,000 Market and the 1871 CC $5 in MS63 higher at $73,500.
In this week's Moderns Wholesale Market Dealer Price Guide there are not a lot of changes but there has been an increase in activity for Registry Sets collector coins. For example, the 1957 Washington Quarter in PR69 Deep Cameo now has a Market price of $2,250. The 1964 Kennedy Half Dollar with the Accented Hair is attracting buyers in all grades. The PR67 is now $100 and higher grades are very scarce, especially in Cameo and Deep Cameo. The high profile 1995 W Silver Eagle in Deep Cameo PR70 is quite rare and several dealers are in the market for any available coins. The new higher Market is $13,000 but most potential sellers will want a premium above this price.
