NumisMedia Weekly Market Report
May 14, 2012
Collectors Seeking Extra Eye Appeal
The continuous decline in metals over the last week has most buyers more than a little nervous. There are currently so many variables that can change the course of the metals from day to day, or even minute to minute. Dealers are still buying Proof Gold Eagles but the premiums have not been as strong over the last several weeks compared to the last year. Currently, one ounce Proof Gold Eagles are wholesaling at $1,615 in the original packaging.
The charts are mixed this week in the HD Wholesale Market Dealer Price Guide. Although there are declines as a result of the generic Gold prices, there are many advances for some better date coins in all series. Seated Half Dollars are steady at current levels with some on the rise. The higher the grade and the lower the population the more competitive collectors become. The 1855 O with Arrows in MS66 & 67 are higher at $16,750 and $41,250, respectively. The 1873 No Arrows Open 3 has increased in AU53 through MS62. The likelihood of locating one in a higher grade is quite remote. The MS62 is now at $33,500. The Carson City issues are very much in demand with the 1875 CC moving to $7,825 and $16,250 in MS65 & 66.
Barber Half Dollars have quite a following and the higher grades are always in demand, especially if they are better dates and have extra eye appeal. CAC coins typically carry a strong premium. While all grades are collected, MS64 through MS66 appear to be very attractive at present levels. This is a popular series to collect because it is attainable at reasonable price points. The total Market price for the MS65 set is $404,375. Even the MS66 set is only $733,325; however, some of these dates may have only a handful of coins certified in either service. Several dates advanced this week in MS65 including the 1895 O, S, 1898 S, 1905 S, 1906 O, and 1909 O.
