Sluggish Metals Slow Market

áááááDealers are hopeful that next week's Central States Show will be a breakout event for the coin market. The last few weeks have been rather sluggish and sales for collector coins have been slower than normal. One of the more active areas on the dealer teletypes has been GSA Carson City Dollars, especially NGC certified coins. At least three times as many dealers are making markets in these coins than the norm. These are very easy coins to sell to the public when prices are competitive.

áááááIn this week's Moderns Wholesale Market Dealer Price Guide the majority of changes are to the downside. We continue to monitor discounting of Washington and State Quarters grading Deep Cameo PR69 and 70. The number of collectors for these coins is down drastically from a couple of years ago and the inventories are deep in many of these dates. Kennedy Half Dollars in PR69 are just as plentiful and we constantly see coins for sale with no buyers at current levels. Even the Silver issues have fallen and are just 50% above their bullion value. We are seeing very little activity in any of the Modern Dollars series.

áááááThe charts for the Gold, Silver, and Platinum Eagles are all down since the last Price Guide. With the metals fluctuating so much, it is difficult for buyers to find the bottom the market. Many analysts feel this is going to continue until the election in November. All the Modern $5 & $10 Gold Commemoratives have declined in the last month and the dealers who buy most of these coins try to pay close to the bullion values. The premiums on these coins dwindled over the last two years. Even though prices are down for Buffalo Gold, demand remains steady for this series.
