NumisMedia Weekly Market Report
December 5, 2011
Early Proof Lincoln Cents in Demand
The majority of trading activity on the teletype systems this past week has been bullion related. Most retail buyers are more interested in adding to their Gold, Silver, and Platinum holdings than purchasing rare coins at this time. This could indicate that most of these buyers feel metals are destined to higher levels next year. What we find amazing is the small premiums on Classic U.S. Gold Coins in MS63 and lower are generally being overlooked for Modern Gold coins. It would appear that many common Gold coins could not get any more economical in relation to the value of Gold.
While Gold has been on the rise this past week, Proof Gold Eagles are following suit. The current wholesale market for one ounce Gold Eagles is $1,865 but they must be in the original government packaging. A few weeks ago the Proof Silver Eagles were not in high regard and the price drifted to the low $50 range; however, they have bounced back in a big way and are now trading at $68 for any date. Now that thousands of sets of the 2011 25th Anniversary Silver Eagles have been delivered, prices are beginning to settle at more reasonable levels. Having been as high as $850 for unopened sets, these are now trading for $725 - $750. Opened sets are $700 each. MS70 & PR70 complete sets are now trading in the $1,500 - $1,600 range.
Very minor changes can be found in this week's Moderns Wholesale Market Dealer Price Guide. Trading is not very active in the late Lincoln series throughout Presidential Dollars. The exception is early Proof Lincoln Cents, which are nearly always in demand. The 1909 in PR64 RB is up to $985 Market and the 1911 PR65 RB is at a higher $1,335. A few other lower grades have also increased this week. Kennedy Half Dollars are trading but at lower levels. There is a long list of declines beginning with the 1973 S in Deep Cameo PR69 all the way through 2003 S. Many of the lower grades have also been discounted.
