Successful Buyers Praise ANA

There are probably a lot of dealers and collectors who are second-guessing themselves as the new week begins. They are sorry for passing on coins offered to them at the ANA, only to later discover that the coins had been sold to another opportunistic buyer. Nearly everyone had long want lists and if you found something intriguing, you needed to snap it up quickly or run the risk of missing a good deal. For most dealers and collectors, the ANA World's Fair of Money was a success; wholesale was very good, retail was better than anticipated and attendance was above expectations.

The Official ANA Auction was hosted by Heritage Auction Galleries and was another stellar event. Platinum Night alone realized well over $22 million. One of the highlights was the 1851 Humbert $50 Lettered Edge slug. It sold for $546,250 and was graded MS63 by PCGS. There were hundreds of significant highlights, but none more important than the set of Barber Half Dollars assembled by Dr. and Mrs. Steven L. Duckor. The overall eye appeal amazed viewers as there were several finest known coins. It is quite obvious that this set was put together over a long period of time with an eye toward the top 1% for each date. It should be some time before anyone can come close to matching this set. It shows that an eye for quality is time and money well spent.

This week's LD Wholesale Market Dealer Price Guide does not show many changes in most series, but there are some specific increases because of recent sales. We should see more increases across many of the charts from the activity from the most recent auctions and shows, especially for Seated coins in all denominations. Barber Dimes, Quarters, and Halves are receiving a lot of attention of late, but the coins must be original and have good eye appeal for the grade. It looks like there are many new collectors for this series.
