NumisMedia Weekly Market Report
March 22, 2010
Dealers Expect Active ANA
The Ft. Worth ANA Money Show will be an interesting test of the coin market. With new legislation just around the corner, it could make for a notable show. Already the metals are reacting downward. Gold fell below the $1,100 mark for the first time in a month and buyers are not sure which way to go. The stock market began the day lower, but has since rallied to +50 points. Coin dealers believe the coin market (metals included) is the best area of the financial choices that anyone can make these days.
You can be sure that dealers and collectors will be looking for 2008 W Buffalo Gold at the ANA. These coins are easy sellers despite the higher premiums. The smaller denominations are inconspicuous on the dealer networks and demand persists at higher levels. Many dealers are reporting steady demand for common U.S. Gold, especially with the lower premiums. They feel this could be the last real opportunity to purchase Ten Dollar and Twenty Dollar gold coins at reasonable levels. The overall market for collector coins is steady with the majority of sales at current Market levels for dealer-to-dealer activity. Of course, if you have the more common coins in inventory, it may take some minor discounting to move them.
This week's LD Wholesale Market Dealer Price Guide shows a small number of changes in most series. Half Cents and Large Cents are in demand as long as they are problem free for the grade. However, there are many collectors interested in acquiring hard to find, better variety issues, even if they have a minor problem. There appears to be a lot of demand for Seated Dimes, Quarters, and Halves if they are at current Market levels. The problem is that most potential sellers do not want to part with nice coins for these prices. They generally want 10- 15% more for above average coins. Dealers are hopeful that some new material will surface at the ANA.
