National Dealers Convene in Baltimore
The Baltimore Coin and Currency Convention begins Thursday with Bowers and Merena Auctions hosting the official sale with nearly 2500 lots available. Volume seems to be the main focus for the auction companies as bidders continue to seek bargains in this soft market. Hundreds of dealers from all over the country will attend and show promoters expect the usual throng of visitors to this major event.
There are a variety of adjustments for several series in this week's HD Wholesale Market Dealer Price Guide. Most of the changes continue to be on the downside as sellers are creating sales through discounts. This is a buyer's market with many collectors taking advantage of dealers and being very selective. If there are multiple coins available in the same date and grade, you can bet that sellers have to be competitive. Walking Liberty Half Dollars are in abundance in the marketplace and many of the more common dates are lower this week in MS65 & MS66. We are seeing many common MS65's trade among dealers at $110 Market.
The last few major auctions have contained many Deep Mirror Prooflike Morgan Dollars and the prices continue to drift downward. This is a highly specialized area of numismatics and when you lose one or two of the major buyers, support at previous levels tends to suffer. This week the 1890 S in MS65 DMPL dropped to $7,850 Market and the 1882 CC in MS66 fell to $4,950. Classic Gold Commemoratives remain on the 'don't want list'; many prices are lower in MS60 through MS67. Heavy discounts are required if you want to sell many of these dates. Premiums continue to fall on generic U.S. Gold coins, especially for the $10's & $20's. Most dealers in this area have plenty of coins and buyers are aware.
