Modern Bullion Coins Surge

     In the last couple of weeks, the coin market appears to be gaining a little more strength, reversing a downward trend from the previous months. Dealers are experiencing an increase in sales with Modern Bullion Coins leading the way. The demand in bullion coins is helping maintain strong premiums in the wholesale market.

     The Whitman Baltimore Coin Expo begins on Thursday, March 26, but dealers will be arriving in Baltimore as early as today for some dealer-to-dealer business. Bowers and Merena will host the official auction of this major event. Stack’s will also have a major sale just prior to the show.

     This week’s Moderns Wholesale Market Dealer Price Guide lists a variety of increases for Gold and Platinum coins. The majority of these changes are in the MS68 and MS69 columns, following the rise in metals since our last printing. Proof Gold Eagles continue to be a very hot item as long as they have all the original government packaging. Dealers wholesale these coins at the rate of at least $1,400 an ounce. Buffalo Gold remains very popular and the fractional coins have been difficult to locate. We scarcely see any of these offered by dealers on the teletypes.

     The 2009 Ultra High Relief $20 Gold continues to attract many buyers. While there are more coins being delivered by the mint, there are still not enough to satisfy demand. Many dealers felt there would be more coins on the market by now and the prices would soften somewhat. However, this is not the case and prices are steady to higher. Currently, dealers will pay at least $1,600 for any coins, whether they are certified or raw, but any sale must include all the original mint packaging and book. We have seen some sales of MS70 Early Release coins at $2,200 wholesale.
