NumisMedia Weekly Market Report
March 2, 2009
2009 Ultra High Reliefs Enter the Market
The U.S. Mint has begun shipping the 2009 Ultra High Relief $20 Gold. NGC and PCGS have both certified some of these much anticipated coins. At this point, it looks like the Early Release coins could have a very low population because of the slow method of distribution by the Mint. Initial prices are running from $1,500 buy to $1,650 sell for coins that qualify for Early Release.
The market for Modern bullion coins remains very intense. Even though the metals are lower the last few days, demand continues very strong and supplies are thin. As you can see in this week's Moderns Wholesale Market Dealer Price Guide, there are numerous increases for Gold and Platinum coins in all denominations, along with Gold Spouse coins and Buffalo Gold. Proof Modern Eagle Gold is very strong if they have the original packaging. Dealers will pay as much as $1,400 per ounce. The same can be said for Proof Buffalo Gold.
Most other modern series remain lethargic except for the occasional increase for the highest graded Lincoln Cents, usually in MS67 Red. This week the 1937 D in MS68 Red increased to a Market price of $7,575 and the 1947 Red in MS67 moved up to $1,975. We found several higher transactions for early Proof Lincoln Cents over the last few weeks. The 1909 Red in PR66 and PR67 jumped to $4,350 and $8,250, respectively. The 1913 Red also increased in PR66 & PR67.
