NumisMedia Weekly Market Report
December 15, 2008
High Grade Indian and Lincoln Cents Tempting Buyers
Many dealers have lowered their buy prices to reduce inventory and finish the year in a sound cash position. In addition, some collectors are selling coins to raise cash for everyday expenses. These two factors point toward a continuation of opportunities for buyers. However, many of the adjustments this week in the LD Wholesale Market Dealer Price Guide are higher. Half Cents and Large Cents are very popular and many issues that don't trade often will still bring premiums to current wholesale levels.
Indian and Lincoln Cents remain steady to higher, especially for key dates and low population grades, which includes the highest grades available in most issues. This week the 1879 Indian in MS66 Red advanced to $6,750 Market. In the Lincoln series, the 1913 S MS66 Red jumped to $29,500 and the 1914 S in MS66 Red climbed to $35,000 Market. Registry collectors will pay just about anything to acquire one of the finest known coins within a specific series of their interest. However, in contrast to the high grade market, we are finding some discounts where populations are higher and availability is rising.
Shield and Liberty Nickels appear to be a little soft as many of the latest transactions have been generally discounted. However, early Bust and Seated coins are still in demand and attract spirited bidding in auctions. The 1800 Bust Dime moved higher in MS60-62 at $20,000, $23,500, and $27,500, respectively. There are numerous increases in Bust Quarters, especially in grades MS63 and higher.
