Bullion Active, 20th Century Coins Sluggish
Indications from the Baltimore Coin and Currency Convention underline a continuing shift from collector coins to bullion. It may not be a major shift but we have seen additional declines because sellers are willing to modestly discount some of their collector coins to acquire bullion related coins. While most Wholesale Market declines are minimal, the premiums for bullion coins remain solid, although the premiums are not quite as high as they were three weeks ago.
This week's LD Wholesale Market Dealer Price Guide contains more declines in 20th Century coins than we have seen in quite awhile. Buffalo Nickels and Mercury Dimes are representative of series where populations are somewhat excessive compared to today's demand. This may suggest that the middle range collector is struggling because of the current economy. However, Lincoln Cents remain steady to higher. This ever-popular series continues to attract Registry collectors looking to purchase the highest certified coins available. This week the 1919 D Red advanced to Wholesale Market of $8,875 in MS66 and $32,500 in MS67. The 1919 S Red in MS66 rose to $22,500.
Pre-1900 coins continue to attract buyers at current Market levels. The difference here may be that potential sellers are more willing to sell some specific issues at today's market than in previous months when they wanted serious premiums above the current market. Bust Dimes and Seated Dimes show numerous advances this week for coins grading MS63 and higher. The 1864 S Seated Dime in MS65 increased to $4,450 Market and the 1870 S in MS65 moved up to $5,050. Low pop rarities still attract serious buyers.
