Carson City Twenties Popular

Wholesale prices for Carson City $20 Gold are rising due to nearly unabated demand. One major dealer told us, “these are very popular coins and we can sell as many accurately graded coins as we can get our hands on.” We all know they must be reasonably priced, however, the FMV has been advancing for the last 6 months. Most of these coins are low mintage and have low populations for each specific grade.

Not only are the Carson City Twenties increasing in this week’s HD Wholesale Market Dealer Price Guide, but also so have most other better dates from 1850 to 1876. There has been a sharp influx into the coin market of new investors and they are being directed toward rare coins of the 1800’s. There are many more advances in other Gold series for better to rare dates. Most of the increases are for coins valued at $2,000 to $20,000. This could indicate that collectors and new investors are looking for diversity rather than a single rarity. However, dealers are still able to sell coins valued at and over $100,000 to advanced collectors.

Many dealers are showing interest in better date Seated Half Dollars. Like other series in the 1800’s, Seated Halves are loaded with specific dates that are not readily available. Some of these are dates thought to be somewhat common, however, they just do not trade that often. The population reports are a good guide to help determine which coins, by grade, could have a promising future. We typically find updated trades on some of these issues at 15% to 35% higher than previous wholesale values.
