More Investing in Numismatics
The just concluded Long Beach Expo saw an increase in public attendance; and they were not just looking, they were buying much more than usual. The uncertain state of the economy is drawing more potential collectors and investors to numismatics. Bank failures and an unstable stock market are creating more opportunities for coin dealers. The public is trying to find solid areas for maintaining their cash reserves as well as potential for future profits. Many investors believe their savings and 401K plans may be at risk, despite the steps the government may take to protect them.
The most active areas of the market remain issues with lower populations. Early Gold is quite strong, along with all Bust and Seated coins. Dealers and collectors are especially looking for coins that have extra eye appeal for the grade. Most dealers do not find resistance to price as much as quality. A rather large collection of Bust Half Dollars sold into the market created some declines in grades Extra Fine to AU58. However, this is still one of the most active series in numismatics. We also found that varieties brought premiums to the current FMV.
Dealers continue to look for better and key date coins for specific series. Even the more common issues that seem to be available will usually sell within 10 percent of current wholesale levels. This week's LD Wholesale Market Dealer Price Guide has a large number of advances for coins in most series. The Half and Large Cents remain very appealing to collectors at present FMV prices. Many of the new transactions in Seated Dimes and Quarters are for grades and dates that had not been traded in sometime. In many cases, these wholesale prices are at much higher levels.
