NumisMedia Weekly Market Report
June 30, 2008
Market in Vacation Mode
The overall coin market continues to be slightly lethargic. Average common coins are somewhat difficult to sell and aggressive dealers typically offer discounts in order to sell quantities of this type of material. Most dealers feel this is how the next month will be until the ANA in Baltimore. Better or rare coins remain in solid demand although most of this demand is created by a lack of availability; kind of a catch-22 for potential activity.
This week's LD Wholesale Market Dealer prices show a variety of advances for coins minted prior to the 1930's. From Half Cents through Liberty Seated Quarters the focus for most dealers and collectors lies in these series. Eye appeal is a strong influence for these coins as we see in various auctions. We monitor some of the same coins and grades and may see a difference of at least 50% in prices realized for coins that have a little something extra. Whether it is color, strike or luster, that extra eye appeal brings out that competitiveness in today's buyers.
ICTA is celebrating its 25th year as the national trade association for coin and metals dealers. ICTA was initially created to fight federal legislation that removed coins and precious metals from qualified investments for IRA accounts. Since, they have worked steadily for the benefit of all coin and precious metals dealers throughout the country. Most importantly, ICTA has helped many states with some sort of exemption from sales tax on the sale of coins and precious metals. This celebration will take place at the Baltimore ANA on July 29th. All interested ICTA members are invited to contact ICTA for more details at (410) 626-7005.
