NumisMedia Weekly Market Report
April 2, 2007
Market for Generics Tentative
While the overall coin market is generally steady, there are signs that all is not perfect. We are seeing more areas being discounted in order to create sales. Dealers remain very active in the wholesale arena because they know this is the only way to make money. However, retail has become somewhat tentative as collectors are looking for specific coins that are not readily available. If they cannot find what they want, their alternatives need to be discounted in order to entice a purchase. Bargain hunting is the order of the day for common coins in inventory.
This week's Modern Wholesale Market Price Guide still has many increases, but many are in areas where the metals increased resulting in higher levels. There are also increases for many of the high grade rarities as dealers are searching for the coins their customers want the most. There seems to be strong demand for the low pop issues in Eisenhower Dollars. Several of these dates have not seen any coins certified in the 70 grade so the available grades are actively sought.
Early Washington Quarters are steady but advances are definitely tied to coins that have low census numbers. The Registry collectors want the highest graded coins to increase the rating of their specific collections. The competition for these coins is formidable and the collectors have plenty of reserves for this material. Rare coins continue to receive much of the attention of advanced collectors.
The metals have opened lower this morning so you will want to watch and take note before you complete any transactions. Gold fell to $659.50 while Silver dropped to $13.09. Platinum is down to $1234.
