NumisMedia Weekly Market Report
Current News and Analysis of the
United States Rare Coin Market
Market Mixed as the Year Winds Down
November 25, 2024
The metals continue to bounce back and forth since the election. Several dealers have mentioned that their customers have been transitioning from rare coins to cryptocurrencies lately and this could be another reason the rare coin market is seeing more discounting, especially with high-priced rarities. Gold hovered near the $2,800 mark before falling back below $2,600 last week, only to advance back over $2,700 at the end of the week. Gold is currently at $2,625 after a major downturn in morning trading.
The last Stack's Bowers Galleries major auction of the year, presented at the Whitman Baltimore Winter Expo two weeks ago and commencing last week at their California offices, was highlighted by a Rarities Night session with a diverse selection of over 400 lots from many collections. No less than eight 1907 $20 Gold St Gaudens High Relief Flat & Wire Rims appeared in this sale, in grades from MS62 to MS65; prices realized ranged from $50,400 to as low as $17,400. There were numerous Carson City Gold coins included with the 1870 CC $20 Gold PCGS AU55 with the CMQ approval (featured last week) garnering a final bid of $1,440,000. Below is just a partial list of highlights from the latest Stack's Bowers Galleries Showcase Auction.
1881 O Morgan Dollar certified by PCGS PR64 and CAC/CMQ
The 1881 O Morgan Dollar has no recorded mintage for the date in Proof, yet here we are with an 1881 O Morgan Dollar in PCGS PR64 with the CAC approval and the CMQ sticker as well. Most knowledgeable numismatics experts, including Kevin Lipton who owned this coin in 1982, believe this to be a true Proof and the only one in existence; the new owner most likely agrees buying this top rarity for $660,000. We think it is Proof as well.
1881 O Morgan Dollar PCGS PR64 CAC CMQ sold for $660,000 in Stack's Bowers Galleries Whitman Expo November 2024 Showcase Auction in Costa Mesa, California, November 18-26, 2024
